New Station Project

December 2018

As noted earlier on the Whats new page, I have undertaken a project to replace the existing Black River Depot.

Old Station

The old Black River Station depot is an Atlas model that has been on the layout since 2014 or before. It is small and doesn't show its interior light very well.

Station Location

Here is the station location after the removal of the old depot. It is between the inner main line and the commuter loading/RIP track on the southeast side of the layout.

Bachmann Kit

I've had Bachmann's Frankford Junction Depot Kit in storage for a long time. Time to put it to use. I intend to use a modified version of the Bachmann kit as a replacement for the little Atlas depot.

Basic Structure

Here the windows and doors are in place. The station foundation has been trimmed on one side to fit between the track at its future location and the station walls are assembled and place on the foundation pad.

Roof Supports

The station walls have had the roof gussets and roof support kneees added. The trimmed base is redily seen in this photo. The narrow walkway will be facing toward the commuter/RIP track side of the station.

Wall Prime Painted

The walls for the station assembly have been cleaned a primmerd with a brick red paint.

Roof Support Knees Removed

After placing the model in its anticipated location, I checked the clearences to the mainline and commuter/RIP sides of the structure. Unfortunately, the roof support knees and the roof paneld interfered with the passage of a train. The knees had to be removed fromm both sides and the roof panels trimmed to allow for passage.

Trimmed Down Depot

Here is the trimmed down version of the depot building. Notice the addition of a cargo/express door. There is a second such door on the other side of the structure.

Grey Station

After studying the structure of the new station above, I deided it looked too much like a prison. A coat of grey paint on the brick work lightened the appearance of the building quite a lot. I like the looks of it much better.

Cupola

Using parts of the passenger shelter from the Frankford Junction kit, I fashioned a cupola/skylight for the station roof. It has a certain appeal.

Skylight Opening

Here the opening in the station roof has been cut out and the trimmed down and painted basic cupola structure is in place on top of it.

New Station

At left is the new Black River Station is in its place on the layout. Most of the planned details in place. The flashing around the base of the cupola/skylight is finished and the chimneys are in place. After even more trimming of the platforms and moving figures and details closer to the structure, the clearances between the platform edge and the track are minimal. After testing the clearances are just too close for trains to pass reliably. Drastic action is going to be needed.

June 2019

Drastic Action

Placing the new station required the removal of the Commuter/RIP track and the turnout that accessed the track. Here the track and switch have bee removed and the old ballast and ground cover with it. I decided to leave the track bumper in place, at least for now.

New Station in Place

With the Commuter/RIP track out of the way there is plenty of room for the station and its platform. Almost too much.

New Station Platforms

Unfortunately, when I trimmed back the station platforms I discarded the pieces. This necessitated adding 'skirts', to the platforms. I used several sections of styrene painted with Floquil Concrete for the new sections of the platforms. They still require a lot of attention to make them presentable, but for now they will do.

Water Tower

The repainted and relocated water tower at the New Black River Station in all its glory. A heavyweight Santa Fe passenger train lead by a pair of F7s is passing in the background.

New Station

Here the new Black river station is temporarily in place on the layout. I'm not sure of final positioning or whether the water tower will be placed as it is. Still a lot of repaires to be made to the ground cover and the rest of the area around the station.

West End Station

This is an aireal view of the New Black River Station area on the layout. The ground cover is in place and the station apron marked off. The new water tower location is permanent. Over all a good outcome to a long project.

Watering

Another view of the new station. NYC 'Hudson' #5335 is on the approach track to the sevice shed preparing to take on water from the relocated tower as a Santa fe passenger train passes by the station.
